Healthy stress comes to us everyday when we do our daily chores at home or exercise in other ways like lifting weights, jogging, walking, or gardening. Our body was made to handle stress in short bouts. Modern day life has high-jacked our our stress response, keeping us in a chronic state of flight or freeze. After reading research articles on the body's stress response and consulting other scholars on stress, I created the PDF below to help to remind us why we need to practice breath work and meditation on a daily basis. When I first started yoga, I was resistant to the breath work. I realize now that I didn't fully understand what yoga breathing was about. When a yoga teacher said to breath forcefully or rapidly, I checked out. I actually "faked the breathing". It didn't feel natural or good.
After researching the Ancient yoga text and what experts had to say about proper breathing techniques I realized a few things I wanted to share with others:
1. Make your breath gentle and light
2. Breath in and out through the nose
3. relax the jaw
4. Use Umbrella Breathing (see Below)
I also recorded a short yoga class on how to do Umbrella Breathing.
